about

We first heard this melody sung by bodhrán player Chris Caldwell in our local session at Clenaghan’s Bar, Co. Antrim. The song tells the story of a woman searching the battlefield for her lover, only to find him fatally wounded. Conor later found it in the 1813 O’Hara Collection, The Gentleman’s Musical Repository. The melody, believed to be an O’Carolan composition, predates the lyrics and goes by the name Captain O’Kane.
